Geopark "Aral": A Scientific and Ecological Initiative for the Sustainable Revival of the Region

One of the most significant projects of Satbayev University is a comprehensive scientific and ecological initiative to create the Geopark "Aral," aimed at preserving the geological and cultural heritage of the Aral Sea region, developing sustainable tourism, and forming a new model for the post-catastrophe recovery of the region. The project is being implemented with the support of international and state partners, including the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, and is developed in accordance with the approaches of the UNESCO Global Geoparks program. Its key goal lies in the integration of science, education, and the local economy for the sustainable development of territories affected by one of the largest ecological disasters of the 20th century, which is directly linked to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The project is being formed as an interdisciplinary platform bringing together scientists, educational institutions, government authorities, and local communities. At its core lies the scientific study of the geoheritage of the Aral region, including the inventory of geosites, the conduct of international expeditions, and the development of a nomination dossier for inclusion in the global network of UNESCO geoparks. The participation of international experts and the holding of specialized conferences confirm the global significance of the territory and strengthen the scientific cooperation of the countries of Central Asia and Europe.
For Satbayev University, the project is not only a research initiative but also a strategic direction of development, demonstrating the university's role as a center for knowledge generation and a driver of sustainable change. Geopark "Aral" contributes to the development of educational programs in the fields of geosciences and ecology, expands academic and scientific mobility, and forms new formats of engagement with regions through the involvement of youth, the development of geotourism, and the support of local initiatives.
Within the structure of the project, particular importance is attached to the creation of a sustainable model of territorial management based on a scientific approach and the active participation of local communities. The development of geotourist routes, educational programs, and research practices makes it possible not only to preserve natural heritage but also to form new economic opportunities for the region. In this way, Geopark "Aral" functions as an integrated platform where scientific research is transformed into concrete socio-economic and ecological outcomes, ensuring a long-term contribution to the sustainable development of Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
