SDG 6. Clean water and sanitation

This is one of the most natural and powerful goals for Satbayev University. The University contributes to its achievement through research in the fields of hydrogeology, water resources, water scarcity, artificial groundwater replenishment, natural and wastewater treatment, and water quality monitoring. Additionally, Satbayev University supports environmental and scientific initiatives related to the Aral region, including the Aral geo-park project, and also develops applied solutions to provide the population with safe drinking water.

What does this mean for Satbayev University

The University develops solutions for sustainable water use in the face of climatic and anthropogenic changes, which is especially important for the southern and arid regions of Kazakhstan. This includes scientific approaches to groundwater replenishment, assessment and monitoring of water resources, purification of polluted and natural waters, as well as access to safe drinking water. This approach allows Satbayev University to contribute not only to the development of science and technology in the field of water resources, but also to the formation of a more sustainable and prosperous environment.

Sustainable environment

Satbayev University also forms a culture of responsible attitude to water resources within the campus, supporting access to drinking water and promoting the values of rational water use as part of a sustainable university environment. There are 67 points of access to drinking water on the campus, and this figure continues to grow.

Research

Satbayev University’s research contribution to SDG 6 is linked to hydrogeology, artificial recharge of groundwater, water scarcity, water resources management, natural and wastewater treatment, and water quality monitoring. The university is implementing a project to develop and improve natural water treatment technologies, developing research projects in geosciences and water-related topics, and demonstrates a strong publication profile through the university repository. These materials address water security, water quality, the use of groundwater for irrigation, monitoring of water-salt regimes, and the development of applied water treatment technologies. A special place is occupied by participation in the Aral geo-park initiative, where the water and environmental agenda merge with scientific and international cooperation around the region’s sustainable future.

Education

The university offers educational programs “Water Resources and Water Use” and “Water Diplomacy”, aimed at training specialists in water resources management, groundwater, transboundary water issues, and sustainable water supply. Of particular importance is the Department of Hydrogeology, one of the university’s oldest departments, which ensures the continuity of the scientific school in hydrogeology and geoecology. Additionally, the university’s contribution to SDG 6 is strengthened by engineering training in water supply and sanitation through areas related to water resource protection and sustainable infrastructure functioning.
