SDG 12. Responsible Consumption and Production

For Satbayev University, SDG 12 is one of the key goals, as the university works at the intersection of rational natural resource use, waste processing, the circular economy, and greening production. The university's strategy highlights rational use of natural resources, recycling, new materials, and safe designs, reflecting the desire to develop engineering and scientific solutions for more sustainable production and consumption models.

What does this mean for Satbayev University

The university supports approaches aimed at reducing resource intensity, reusing raw materials, environmentally safer technologies, and sustainable procurement; the corresponding policy base is also present among the university's SDG documents.

Sustainable environment

Satbayev University contributes to achieving SDG 12 "Responsible Consumption and Production" by creating a university environment where sustainability principles are taken into account in daily management and economic decisions. One of the key tools here is the Sustainable Procurement Policy, which establishes an approach where the choice of goods, works, and services takes into account not only price and quality but also environmental, social, and economic factors throughout the entire life cycle. The policy is directly aimed at reducing negative environmental impact, efficient use of funds, and promoting responsible practices in the supply chain.
An important part of this approach is waste reduction. The policy specifically emphasizes the need to minimize waste generation, excessive packaging, and inefficient use of resources, as well as to consider issues of maintenance, disposal, decommissioning, and product replacement already at the procurement cycle stage. This allows sustainable environment to be viewed not as a separate initiative but as a systemic principle of university infrastructure management.

Research

A strong aspect of Satbayev University in the context of SDG 12 is research on waste processing into new materials. The university is implementing a project to create materials for 3D printing from plastic waste, focusing on resource reuse and reducing environmental impact. Another important area is anti-corrosion coatings based on manganese ore processing waste, demonstrating how secondary raw materials can become the basis for new materials. Additional publications on secondary technogenic raw materials and waste processing are available in the university repository.

Education

The university’s contribution to SDG 12 through education is manifested in training specialists capable of working with resource conservation, waste processing, greening production, developing new materials, and implementing circular economy principles. The Department of Chemical Processes and Industrial Ecology plays an important role, offering programs related to chemical processes, materials, bioecological engineering, and industrial ecology. A strong example of educational contribution is the Recycling in Metallurgy program, while the practice-oriented mastery of these principles is reinforced by the Student EcoHub.
